Cover letters

Two letters laid on their sheet, for the two situations that really happen: you write to a company that asked for nothing, or you answer an advert. Either way the letter works in three moves: what you understood about them, what you bring, what you will do together.

Two model letters, written for this page. They belong to no one.

SESAME entrance exam

Translation made for this page. The letter was written in French.

I am currently in my final year of secondary school (school hidden, BFI English-language track) with mathematics and SES (economics and social sciences) as my specialities, and I wish to join a post-baccalaureate business school through the SESAME entrance exam, to benefit from an education that combines academic rigour and international openness.

I am therefore drawn to management and to multicultural exchange, shaped in particular by the years I spent in the USA and by my bilingual schooling; joining a grande école such as the Global BBA would give me the tools I need to grow in an international economic environment. Attending the l’école open days in Cergy let me discover the university campus and the range of programmes on offer. It confirmed my interest in this path centred on economics and management.

My extracurricular experiences reflect my curiosity and my commitment. I have been playing the piano for more than six years, I play basketball in a club, and I take part in my school's student activities. These extracurricular commitments taught me the importance of teamwork and perseverance. I also developed a personal project buying and reselling second-hand clothes, which required me to acquire skills in organisation, logistics and market assessment.

I believe I have the motivation and the strengths needed to pass the exam and join a grande école.

Subject: Application for a one-month first-level internship, May or June 2026

Dear Sir or Madam,

Your centre ships several thousand parcels a day, and your picking teams work just-in-time across three shifts. That is exactly the ground I am looking for: I want to see how a supply chain holds together, from the receiving dock to the lorry, before I discuss it in a classroom.

I am in the first year of the Global BBA, and my school requires a one-month first-level internship. I have already worked in a team under time pressure: two summers in catering, six-hour services, one station to hold without ever keeping the floor waiting. I take one useful thing from it: the punctuality and care of a single station set the pace of the whole chain.

I am available full time from 4 May to 5 June 2026, and travel is not an issue for me. I would be glad to meet you to discuss it, whenever suits you.

Yours faithfully,

First name SURNAME

What this letter does

  • It starts with THEM, not with you. The first paragraph shows you looked at what the company does: that is what separates a letter from a form.
  • The second paragraph does not recite the CV: it takes ONE experience and draws a lesson that is useful here.
  • The dates are exact: 4 May to 5 June, full time. A recruiter will not call back to ask about your availability.
  • Three things to replace: the company’s name and business, the date, and the middle paragraph. The rest holds as it is.

Subject: Reply to your financial analysis internship advert, posted on 12 November

Dear Sir or Madam,

Your advert asks for someone able to run a cash-flow model and explain its variances every week. Both verbs caught my attention: run, and explain. That is what I did for two years on my own resale business, at another scale: a weekly tracking sheet, and the obligation to understand why a month fell short.

I handled 600 orders and €48,000 in revenue, with 41% year-on-year growth. What I take from it is a method more than a result: you do not fix a figure you have not explained. On the tools side, I use Excel daily and I am taking the financial accounting and finance courses of my first year.

I am available for six months from January 2027, in Paris or the surrounding region. My CV is attached; I am available for an interview at your convenience.

Yours faithfully,

First name SURNAME

What this letter does

  • It picks up the advert’s own WORDS (run, explain) and answers them one by one. It is the fastest way to show you read it.
  • The CV’s numbers come back, but to state a method: 600 orders and +41% prove a way of thinking, not a boast. Put your own there.
  • The subject line quotes the advert’s publication date. A team that posts thirty a month must know which one in two seconds.
  • No apology, no “I take the liberty of”. A letter that apologises for existing reads as a lukewarm application.
